Morgan Township Volunteer Fire Department Receives $5,000 Men’s Fund Grant

The Porter County Community Foundation (PCCF) Men’s Fund is granting $5,000 to the Morgan Township Volunteer Fire Department (MTVFD).

Out of the submitted applications for the 2023 grant, the fire department was selected to receive the grant to support personal protective equipment (PPE) for the firefighters. This equipment includes turn-out jackets, turn-out pants, structural firefighting gloves, vehicle extrication gloves, fire helmets, fire boots, and fire resistant hoods.

“This PPE will be used to protect the firefighters who are wearing it along with saving lives and protecting property in the areas in which the Morgan Township Volunteer Fire Department serves,” said James Lewandowski, a member of the Morgan Township Volunteer Fire Department.

The roster of firefighters at the Morgan Township Volunteer Fire Department currently has 29 members, the most the department has ever had! While having so many dedicated firefighters in Morgan Township is impressive, it has put a strain on its ability to properly outfit all members with proper PPE due to the small amount of PPE they currently have available.

The National Fire Protection Association recommends PPE be replaced every ten years. As probationary members join the Morgan Township Volunteer Fire Department, they are frequently issued gear that is older than ten years due to the costs associated with purchasing new PPE. Once a probationary member has been on the department for one year, they are voted on by the membership to receive full membership benefits and rights. When a probationary member becomes a full member, new PPE is purchased.

Established in 1976, the Morgan Township Volunteer Fire Department was born from the unwavering commitment of residents who recognized the need for a reliable fire service in their rural, farm-dotted region. Since its inception, they’ve remained steadfast in the mission to serve and protect the residents and properties of Morgan Township. They are strategically positioned to respond swiftly to the 250 emergencies incidents that happen per year in the areas covering approximately 45 square miles.
